Jack pleased to be one of scoring Barnsley strikers

-

SATURDAY’S goal-scoring hero Jack Aitchison is delighted that he and Barnsley’s other strikers have started to hit the net regularly.

The Scottish forward, who headed in the only goal at Fleetwood Town in the 90th minute, has two goals this season while Devante Cole has four and James Norwood three. They have been netting regularly across the last month, after the Reds missed out on strikers late in the transfer window.

Aitchison told the Chronicle: “It was going to take time at the start of the season. We hadn’t played together before.

“Nors and Coley have been brilliant, so has Luke Thomas. It’s hopefully starting to click. It’s an enjoyable team to play in.”

Aitchison came on in the 86th minute and scored in the 90th.

“I haven’t scored in injury-time since youth level. I was just glad to do it for the lads who had worked hard and the fans. I was happy to score and then to see the boys’ faces and how much it means.”

Aitchison found the bottom right corner after meeting James Norwood’s leftwing cross.

“I had a chat with the gaffer during the week to get in-between the posts more. I have seen Nors hang the ball up like that in training and I went for it. “I couldn’t ask for a better cross. “I just let it hit my head. It’s the second time I have headed it and second time I have scored.

“Sometimes lately I have been over thinking it in front of goal but my head was clear.

“I had a feeling before the game that I would come on and make an impact.”

Aitchison nearly missed out on the game due to a hamstring injury.

“My first session was on Thursday, but then I felt it that night. The physios tried to pull me out of training on Friday but I carried in. I didn’t think I would come on but luckily I did.”*
