Penistone Church come from 2-0 down to win midweek cup thriller

■ Athersley edged out in seven-goal thriller at higher league Emley ■ Worsbrough Bridge out of Division 1 relegation zone with 5-3 win

-

THERE were mixed fortunes in midweek for Barnsley teams in the League Cup as Athersley Rec went out then Penistone Church went through.

Rec lost 4-3 at Emley, who play a division above them, on Tuesday.

Cole Patrick put the Penguins in front then, after the hosts levelled just before the interval, he made it 2-1 early in the second half.

There were four goals in 12 minutes midway through the second half with Emley going 3-2 up then Lee Garside levelling only for the hosts to get what proved to be the winner.

Church came from 2-0 down at half-time to win 3-2 at home to Eccleshill United on Wednesday.

Church’s goals were all between 65 and 75 minutes as Eccleshill netted an own goal then debutant Maasai Dearlove levelled before Brett Lovell got the winner.

Manager Stephen Lenthall said: “It’s a massive win.

“Talk about a game of two halves.

“We started quite well but didn’t create chances.

“Eccleshill opened us up with their first real attack and it was very poor defending as a team.

“That knocked us off our game a little bit and we let Eccleshill dictate the rest of the half.

“They looked to have a lot more energy than us.

“They got another goal from outside the box which was a great finish.

“It was a big uphill task to come back. “We went through a lot at half-time. “We were excellent in the second half with free-flowing football.

“Maasai had a great debut and scored a good goal then the big man Brett scored a wondergoal with a great header.

“We deserved it and it gives us good momentum going into our next game.”

Church had won 2-0 at Goole in the Premier Division on Saturday.

Nathan Keightley netted in the eighth minute then Reece High struck in the 90th.

Church are fourth with 21 points from 11 games.

Lenthall said: “It was a great reaction from Wednesday night’s defeat to Emley.

“It was important that we started the game well.

“Our ‘keeper Harry Ambler made a vital one-on-one save with ten minutes remaining in the first half.

“Goole’s a hard place to go to, where they are in the table’s misleading.

“The biggest thing was making sure we got three points.”

Worsbrough Bridge won 5-3 at Selby Town on Saturday to move out of the Division One relegation zone.

After back-to-back away wins, they are now fourth-bottom – one point and one place outside the relegation zone.

Selby took the lead in the sixth minute but Lewis O’Connor levelled in the eighth.

Alex Hutchinson and Conor Glavin put Worsbrough 3-1 up, but Selby pulled one back before the break.

Thomas Cadzow put Bridge 4-2 ahead then they conceded a penalty which was scored midway through the second half.

Michael Jepps secured the win in the last minute.
