Managing the menopause
AGE UK Barnsley have released a number of ways women can manage symptoms of menopause this week.
Tuesday was World Menopause Day, which aims to raise awareness and the support options available. Many women experience changes to their cognitive function and mood, with symptoms including brain fog, anxiety, depression and unexplained rage.
Sarah Wilson, health and wellbeing social inclusion officer at Age UK Barnsley, said: “There are a number of options to help manage and alleviate symptoms of menopause. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a medical intervention that will regulate and replace lost hormones required for all body functions including maintaining cognitive and mood function for successful ageing. Another simple step is to get more exercise.
“An increase in physical activity is one of the best ways to help manage and support women through menopause and promote healthy ageing. Slow repetitive movements found in activities like walking, cycling, dancing, pilates, yoga and tai chi are shown to have the best benefits for our mood and wellbeing.”
