Diwali tribute to Harshad

-

BARNSLEY town centre was lit up on Monday to celebrate Diwali.

The festival of light takes place each year over a five-day period, with many Hindu, Jain, Sikh and Buddhist communities coming together to celebrate.

The council has supported the celebrations for the last 19 years, and a light switch-on took place on Monday.

Usually, the late Harshad Patel would organise the event – but due to his sudden death, it was not possible to organise an event on a large scale.

A council spokesperson said: “The mayor gave a speech prior to the switch on which was attended by a number of local councillors and members of the public. Tribute was paid to the late Mr Patel, who for 19 years, championed community cohesion and organised the Diwali light switch on event in Barnsley. We were honoured to keep his legacy alive this year by lighting up the darkness in Barnsley.”
