Hunter wins national title but Jaymyleigh just misses out

- By Ashley Ball

TEENAGE talent Hunter Lambert became a national champion in convincing style.

The 16-year-old from Wath, who represents the town’s boxing club, won the 46kg Development Championships in Banbury, Oxfordshire, by first round stoppage after giving her opponent, Powerday Hooks’ Paris Lloyd, two standing counts.

That improves her record to four wins from five, all by way of stoppage.

Her only loss was on a split decision to Tamzen Quigley who is a Scottish international.

Hunter will now face a sterner test tonight in Olena Heagney on her club’s own show at the Burlington Club, Wath. Olena boxes out of Gladiators Gym in Huddersfield and has had more than double the number of fights as well as experience representing England in the recent Three Nations Championships. Brampton’s Jaymyleigh Pettinger, representing Micky’s Athletic Amateur Boxing Club, was so close to claiming the same title at 63kg.

Pettinger really put the pressure on Track and Fitness boxer Tallulah Pulling from the off and seemed to catch her with clean shots in the opening round.

Pulling rallied as the contest wore on, making it go to the judges’ scorecards. They favoured Pulling with a split decision of 3-2.
