Make over-75s take another test

-

J ELLIOTT, Midland Road, Royston

We’ve all seen it, the car slowly making its way into the supermarket car park, a face pressed against the windscreen usually wearing a pair of thick bifocals.

Eventually finding a car parking spot, a bit more toing and froing, and we park in a reasonably straight line.

A couple of minutes go by, the driver’s door opens, a stitch appears, then a key, another minute then up we get.

A bemused driver appears with a look of what year is it, what day is it, where am I? Eventually the person toddles off to the entrance.

Anyone over 75 should take a second driving test – a large percentage would fail. Anyone in this age group who thinks their physical abilities are the same as when they were younger are deluding themselves.

It won’t happen of course, because it’s not a vote-winner, but true all the same.
