Reunion event for former miners

A DATE has been set for an annual miners’ reunion to remember lives lost in Barnsley’s collieries.

The popular event, which was started by miner Jacksy Howell in 1993 following the closure of Grimethorpe pit, will take place at the village’s mining memorial outside St Luke’s Church on December 22.

Ex-miners march from the working men’s club on Brierley Road up to the church at 1pm, where wreaths will be laid outside the memorial to commemorate those who lost their lives while working in pits.

Organiser Johnny Wood said: “This year’s a special one as it’s 30 years since the pit closed – it’s a great event and we’re looking forward to another good turnout.”
