Rise in ‘hidden crime’ is recorded

-

SOUTH Yorkshire Police recorded an increase in honour-based abuse offences – where a crime involves threats of violence or intimidation – last year.

Recent figures from the Home Office show police forces across England and Wales recorded more than 2,800 of these offences last year.

South Yorkshire Police recorded 77 of these offences – some of which occurred in Barnsley – up from 60 the year before.

The Home Office said it recognised honour-based abuse is a ‘hidden crime’ and victims can be reluctant to bring the abuse to the attention of police.
