Festive event at different venue
A VENUE’S operators have been accused of displaying a lack of community spirit – after declining to host a popular Christmas event.
Shafton Working Men’s Club, on High Street, has been used for the village’s parish council’s post-Christmas light switchon get-together for years.
However, after parish councillors enquired with the club about the forthcoming celebration, operators opted to decline. In a letter, they blamed ‘unruly’ youths for the decision – something which has irked parish council chairman Dave North.
“It’s absolutely ridiculous – the club’s been used for this occasion for years as it’s a real family event in the run-up to Christmas,” he told the Chronicle.
“Kids are allowed in the club 365 days a year so this decision does not show community spirit.”
A spokesperson for the club confirmed the decision had been taken due to previous occurrences of antisocial behaviour.
“We had a lot of hassle last time and there’s a perfectly good community centre nearby, so we thought it was better to hold it there,” they added.
“Some youngsters came in without adults, they were asked to leave, and it resulted in staff receiving verbal abuse.”
Couns James Higginbottom and Brenda Eastwood, who both represent the Wombwell ward, visited a local clothing bank this week. They said: “We recently visited the Wombwell Clothing Bank at Wombwell Main Community and
Sporting Association to meet with the amazing team of volunteers. The group are doing fantastic work to support local families during this cost-of-living crisis and we take our hats off to them for their hard-work and dedication.”
