Barnsley withdraw from match for third time this season and Wath gain 19-18 victory

-

BARNSLEY RUFC’s men’s team were unable to field a side for the third time this season on Saturday.

The Shaw Laners forfeited their game at third-bottom Bramley Phoenix, having done the same for two other away matches in September.

They have been docked points for pulling out of games and have lost the five they have played so are 27 points adrift at the bottom of Yorkshire Division Two. Barnsley are due to host Ripon tomorrow before visiting near neighbours

Wath the following Saturday.

Wath are currently fourth, having won 19-18 at home to Wheatley Hills.

They have won six of their eight matches so far while losing two. They are just five points off top in a congested upper section of the league table.

Wath raced into a 12-0 lead thanks to four penalties awarded for offside and kicked by Jack Whitlam within the first half an hour.

Wheatley had missed two penalties then conceded a try when Andy Bartlett scored an opportunist touchdown after the ball squirted out of a ruck.

Whitlam added the conversion to make it 19-0 at half-time but the visitors fought back after the break.

Wheatley Hills scored a try early in the second half then they added the conversion and two penalties to make the score 19-13.

The visitors scored another try with ten minutes left but missed the conversion and the score remained at 19-18 throughout a nervous finale.

Wath are due to visit third-placed Baildon tomorrow.

Barnsley Ladies are back in action tomorrow from 1pm.

The Shaw Laners are currently sixth in Championship One North, the second tier in England.

They have won two and lost two of their four league games so far this season. Tomorrow they are due to host seventh-placed Kenilworth.
