Herbie happy to attack more and wants goal

HERBIE Kane enjoyed playing in a more attacking role in Barnsley’s last game and hopes his first goal for the club is not far away.

The midfielder, 23, scored seven goals in his first season in senior football on loan from Liverpool to League One Doncaster Rovers in 2018/19 then two the following campaign at Hull City in the Championship.

But he is yet to net in 39 Reds games after joining more than two years ago, 23 of which have been off the bench, while he also did not score in 37 games on loan to Oxford United last season.

Kane told the Chronicle: “It’s something I want. I want to improve my goal-scoring and I hope I can get a few goals to help the team.

“I am feeling fitter and fitter after coming back from injury. I am just trying to play as many games as I can and help the team as much as a I can.”

Kane has often played in a two-man midfield for Barnsley but was one of three in the centre for Saturday’s 2-0 win over Forest Green Rovers which ended a four-game run without a league win or goal.

He said: “I felt like I was higher up the pitch in the attacking areas.

“We played that shape well. It suited us and it was good. I do like that role.

“It allows me to go forward and have freedom on the ball. But whatever system we play and whatever position I am in, I am there to do a job.”

Kane lives with Luke Thomas who is out until the new year with a broken leg.

The close friends are both from the South West and have settled back in Yorkshire after loans away last season.

Kane said: “He seems to be doing well. He’s in good spirits and cracking on with his rehab.

“We are mates and we live together. “I am making sure he’s alright outside of football.

“He’s doing well and the sooner he is back, the better for us and for him.”

Kane also knows deadline day signing Adam Phillips from the Liverpool academy.

He said: “He’s definitely got qualities. He’s adapting to Barnsley and hasn’t been here long.

“He will definitely help the team and squad.

“You can see that in training.”
