Wooden poppies to be handed out in Hoyland

-

MEMBERS of Hoyland’s Royal British Legion have been busy creating handmade poppies to present around the village.

Phil Hickling and Gary Moore began making wooden, painted poppies last year following retirement – they invested their time into the legion and came up with the idea of creating one poppy for every soldier on the Hoyland memorial. Since starting, around ten months ago, 420 poppies have now been presented on lampposts and ‘everywhere they could possibly attach them’.

Each poppy details a name and the war the soldier fought in – as well as being all over the village, the group have made a variety of things to mark remembrance day.

Phil told the Chronicle: “We have also been busy making other things – we have made the same amount of poppies to stick in to the ground on memorial day a mounting for every soldier on the memorial. We’ve made silhouetted figures and bottled lights too.

“After retirement I wanted to invest some spare time into the

Royal British Legion so that is what I did.”
