A chance to stick your head in tiny museum...

- By Elle Wakefield

MUSEUM bosses have created a new venue in the town centre – which could well be the smallest yet.

A recently refurbished traditional telephone box is now the temporary home of a life-sized replica of the innermost coffin of Tutankhamun – often referred to as ‘King Tut’.

Barnsley-born Egyptologist Professor Joann Fletcher has curated the small museum – among others – to celebrate the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922.

This project is funded by Historic England and Barnsley Council – encouraging people to visit the high street and fuel economic, social and cultural recovery.

Coun Robert Frost, cabinet spokesperson for regeneration and culture, said: “Barnsley Museums are always thinking outside the box, and want to use every space possible to showcase our borough’s amazing history.

“This new museum space will be an opportunity to bring culture to the high street, and what better way than with Tutankhamun himself.

“Highlighting the brilliant new exhibition in Experience Barnsley Museum, which has already attracted thousands of visitors in its first week of opening, it’s a real treat and spectacular surprise for those passing.”
