Club’s a real all-rounder

-

WORSBROUGH Bridge Cricket Club is much more than its name would suggest.

The thriving club, based at Park Road, is at the very heart of the community and offers a helping hand wherever it can.

Shortlisted in the Love Where You Live category in the Proud of Barnsley awards, the club was nominated by local councillor Jake Lodge.

He said: “Apart from being a hugely successful and longstanding cricket club, they have branched out to offer support to everyone in Worsbrough.

“They have invested in their club, so that they are able to give support to children, young people and adults of all abilities – this ranges from hosting holiday clubs to the ECB All Stars and the women’s cricket/softball team.

“Alongside volunteers at Worsbrough

Sports and Development Association, many of the volunteers from Worsbrough Bridge CC established a shopping and prescription delivery service during the pandemic, supporting residents across Worsbrough in one of our most difficult times.

“The club are continuing to build on their history, through the work they do to support the wider community and encourage everyone to get involved!

“However, none of this would be possible, without the support of the club’s greatest assets – the volunteers!

“The volunteers make it all work, from the tuck shop, to delivering the holiday activities and even a swap shop, which was established to share and pass down/up cricket whites, to take away any burdensome costs.”

Child welfare officer Joanne Kemp said: ‘The club is over 100 years old but it is more than a cricket club.

“We have a great team of volunteers and the Derek Littlewood Foundation has helped six players by providing all the cricket gear that they need and to help with the financial burden that is to some families in the area.

“Over the years the club has also been involved in fundraising and our main event is a yearly sponsored walk.

“The seniors do various mountain walks within the UK and the juniors do local walks. The amount raised is split between club funds and the Alzheimers Society.

“We do try to put back where we can – we have a lot of volunteers which we do greatly appreciate.

“If it wasn’t for them a lot of things we do wouldn’t be able to be done or be provided for the community, children and adults alike.”
