Hundreds gather to remember war heroes

Town centre is packed at annual Remembrance Sunday event

-

HUNDREDS of residents gathered in Barnsley town centre on Sunday to pay their respects to those who made the ‘ultimate sacrifice’.

In a service held outside the town hall, representatives of the armed forces community were invited to lay wreaths alongside the Mayor of Barnsley Sarah Tattersall.

Almost 100 Barnsley Singers – an adult choir – were present at the service.

A spokesperson for the group said: “They sang with quality and sincerity alongside Barnsley Met Band and their conductor, Alex Francis.

“They sounded fantastic as ever. “Well done to all who sang, you were a credit to our town and community.

“We will remember them.”

?? ?? TWO sisters brought out their chalk again to create a tribute for Remembrance Sunday. Darcey and Robyn Simpson created a mural to Queen Elizabeth following her death in September, and chalked another tribute on the wall outside their house on Underhill, Worsbrough Bridge.
The mural was created in honour of Remembrance Sunday and created a lot of interest.
Coun Jake Lodge said: “This mural, like the one they created back in September, is a fantastic tribute to those who have served our country.
“It’s also fantastic example of the community in which we live and it’s great to see the sisters unleash their creativity in a such a positive way. I’m keeping my eyes peeled for what comes next.’’
