MP pays tribute at Westminster
STEPHANIE Peacock visited the Parliamentary Garden of Remembrance to remember a local fallen soldier.
The Barnsley East MP dedicated a cross in the garden to Roy Alvin Jagger.
Nominations were requested on her social media pages from those living in her Barnsley East constituency who decided that Roy would be the ex-soldier to receive the dedication.
Roy was a Sapper in the Royal Engineers Tunnelling Service – previously being a miner in Barnsley.
He was 21 when he died and was nominated by his nephew Phil Jagger, who has been researching his life and his experiences during the Second World War. It is believed that Roy died in a concentration camp.
Stephanie said: “‘I was pleased to receive
Phil’s nomination, and dedicate my cross in the Parliamentary Garden of Remembrance to his uncle, Roy – a very deserving nomination. It is so important that we continue to honour Roy and others like him, who fought so bravely and were so sadly lost in conflict. “I hope that as many as possible were able to mark Remembrance Day this year – we will never forget the sacrifices so many made to keep us safe.”
