Online guidance given to councillors
COUNCILLORS must now follow new guidance whilst using social media.
They were also encouraged to pledge their support to the council’s No Place For Hate campaign and to acknowledge their role in making online hate and abuse socially unacceptable.
Coun James Higginbottom, who represents the Wombwell ward, said: “I fully support and welcome this guidance.
“But I must say that a policy is only as strong as the commitment to uphold it.
“That means political groups represented in the chamber, individual councillors, and candidates for public office taking responsibility.
“We cannot be in a position where any person feels empowered to act as a political arsonist.
“Deeds, not words, are what this pledge and this policy will stand or fall by.”
