Homes rejected at village surgery French TV appearance for Lauren

- By Jack Tolson

PLANS to change the use of a Grimethorpe doctor’s surgery – and turn it into eight new properties – have been rejected by the council.

The former Caxton House Surgery, on High Street, is currently vacant – but plans to turn it into seven apartments and one studio flat have been turned down.

The application was originally submitted last month.

A decision notice states: “In the opinion of the Local Planning Authority, the proposed living accommodation for the seven apartments and studio flat is substandard due to inadequate internal space standards.

“Furthermore, bedroom two of apartment one is not served by a window, apartment six is a single aspect studio flat served by one window and apartments seven and eight are served by small velux roof lights only and as such future occupiers of these apartments would not have an adequate outlook or sufficient light.”

UNDER the Tories, our education system is crumbling.

Underfunded and underappreciated, 12 years of Conservative cuts have left our schools desperately trying to make ends meet.

Teachers and support staff give up their free time and energy to provide the best possible learning environment for children. Their work should not be undervalued. As a former teacher, I know how challenging the school day can be and teachers across Barnsley have my huge admiration and thanks.

Under this government, we are seeing far too many teachers leaving the profession, with a recent NEU poll suggesting that 44 per cent of teachers plan on leaving within the next five years, with many saying that their workload has become unmanageable.

As teachers are leaving, schools are finding it difficult to fund replacements meaning that many teachers are left with double the workload for no extra pay.

I recently met with Hoyland Common Academy Trust to discuss the difficulties that they are facing.

The government are making forward financial planning almost impossible by not informing schools of their financial settlements until the last minute, and whilst the recent teacher pay rise was very welcome, no extra money from government left them with a financial hole to fill, which alongside increasing SEND costs and a 400 per cent rise in energy costs has left them with very limited reserves and difficult decisions to make.

Barnsley deserves better.

The Chancellor announced £2.3 billion of additional funding in 2023/24

A BARNSLEY artist is set to perform on the French equivalent of the US

Late Show.

Delilah Bon, Hands off Gretel star Lauren Tate’s alter ego, was invited by host Alain Chabat and flown to Paris last month to perform on the show.

Her performance will be aired as part of ten special broadcasts on TF1, the largest TV channel in France, directly following their daily World Cup coverage.

The first show was aired on

November 21 and will continue into the beginning of December.

The exact date of the broadcast featuring Delilah is to be confirmed.

She said: “It’s been such a surreal experience. I’ve performed in front of thousands of people over the years at gigs and festivals but performing in front of a live TV audience was a totally different experience. and 2024/25 for schools in his Autumn Statement, which is of course welcome at face value. But the reality is that this funding will do little more than cover the astronomical extra costs schools are forced to pay, many of these a result of skyrocketing energy bills.

There are lots of good schools across Barnsley with dedicated staff, but Barnsley is an area with higher need and lower investment and that is why government support must be increased.

The Office for Budget Responsibility predicts that the country will remain in in recession for two years so pressures on schools and indeed across society will only increase.

I have written to the Secretary of State for Education about the pressures schools in Barnsley are facing and will continue to raise the challenges in Parliament.

“Knowing my performance will be streamed into millions of homes in a few weeks is just incredible – it’s something I have always dreamed of and an amazing opportunity.”
