10,000th tree takes root in Locke Park ceremony

- By Elle Wakefield

SCHOOLCHILDREN were welcomed to Locke Park by Mayor of Barnsley Sarah Tattersall to witness a biodiversity scheme’s 10,000th tree being planted.

Kids from Joseph Locke Primary School attended on Tuesday alongside Father Peter Needham, who blessed the tree.

Coun Tattersall said: “The children from Joseph Locke each added a bit of soil and this tree will grow with them.

“As they get older, so will the tree, and they will be able to come back in decades time to visit it.

“Maybe they’ll even come back with their own children and grandchildren and say ‘I helped plant that tree’.

“Even if they leave Barnsley, a little bit of them will remain here.”
