Tennis chairman steps down after successful 20-year stint

CHRIS Day has stepped down as chair of Barnsley Tennis Club after a stint of more than 20 years.

Under Chris’ tenure, the Wilthorpeb­ased club has added three courts to the four original and upgraded the facilities in a £500,000 project.

They now have a record number of members including more than 100 juniors.

They have been crowned Yorkshire Division One champions on three occasions and won several Sheffield and District League titles, also winning ‘Yorkshire Club of the Year’ and ‘Sheffield and District Club of the Year’. Chris was recently awarded the LTA Meritoriou­s Service Award and has now been appointed a director of Yorkshire tennis.

He said: “It has been a pleasure to lead this club over many years and to work with such fantastic volunteers who have contribute­d to the club we now have. “The club is in a very good place, and I am confident that it will progress to the next level as it develops both socially and commercial­ly.

“We have a fantastic club, and I would urge anyone interested in playing tennis to try out our facilities where they will be made welcome.”

Andy Coe will take over.

Meanwhile, Barnsley teams were in action in the Sheffield and District Winter League this week.

The A team lost at home to Grove A, 49 games to 31. The team was Alison Eyre, Sarah Coe, John Hinds and Joe Finch. Barnsley’s B team lost 4-0 to league leaders Wheatley Hills in Doncaster.

The team consisted of John Gregson, Carol Gawron, Debbie Maskrey and Gary Maskrey.

The junior teams had better results. Barnsley under 14s beat Mexborough 4-0 away and the Barnsley under 16s beat Welbeck at home 4-0.

The under 16s were Libby Wilson, Finlay Nixon, Eleanor Kelsall-Yoward and Isaac Waters. The under 14s were Phoebe Dyson, Oliver Copperwhea­t, Daniel Gibbs and Luke Gorman.
