Top-scorer Cole pleased with form but wants to keep going
DEVANTE Cole is happy with the amount of chances Barnsley have created since changing to 3-5-2 and believes they can score even more goals in the near future.
The 27-year-old striker tops the scoring charts at Oakwell, after netting his sixth in all competitions in the FA Cup win over Crewe Alexandra on Saturday.
Cole told the Chronicle: “I am happy with being top-scorer. I should have a few more goals than six but if I can get a few more I will be happy. I just need to keep going. I am just happy to be out there and with the team doing well.”
Barnsley have been far more prolific since changing to 3-5-2 in late October.
“We had four games when we didn’t create anything and it was a struggle for everyone. We changed and we look a lot more dangerous now so hopefully we can continue with that.
“We have showed in the last few games that goals can come from all areas.
“We want even more now.”
Midfielder Josh Benson is one goal behind Cole with five while Adam Phillips, another midfielder, has netted four in his last five games. Is there a race to get the most? Cole said: “There’s always competition but it’s good that everyone is scoring goals and chipping in. That helps us win which is the aim.”
Barnsley have now won their last three league matches and moved into League One’s top six. Cole said: “It’s been good for us to get a few wins on the bounce and we just want to continue that. You always want to be winning and be up there competing high up in the table.”
Barnsley now visit fourth-placed Peterborough United tonight. Cole said: “You know what you get with them. They are always a threat and score goals but they always concede goals. We know, if we carry on how we have been playing, we will give them a good test.”
Cole is enjoying working under head coach Michael Duff. He said: “He’s just come in and given me a chance, believed in me and I have taken that chance. He has worked on bits of my game but mainly it’s just giving me an opportunity and hopefully I have repaid him. I just want to keep doing well for him.”
