Bass Player

Cincinnati

“Ropeadope is an amazing label out of Philadelphia, with artists like Snarky Puppy and DJ Logic. I was super excited to be on the label. Don’t get me wrong – I love the album to death and it’s got some really cool songs I’m proud of, but I wanted to stretch out as a songwriter.

“I love the funk, obviously, but the songs on Cincinnati don’t probably fall into ‘Freekbass’ territory. It doesn’t quite fit under the banner of the blueprint that I’ve laid out for myself as an artist.

“I was trying to record my personal Abbey Road here, but I wasn’t sure if I quite got there. I like the idea of an alter ego, because a great song is a great song no matter if it’s hip-hop, funk, rock, country.

“There’s a version of ‘Nothing Else Matters’ that Metallica recently did with Miley Cyrus, and I’m not a huge fan of either recording, but a great song transcends any genre.

“And here’s an exclusive for you: I’m partnering up with Ernie Ball to do a Freekbass Music Man Stingray together. That will be my touring bass very soon. I’m starting with the classic onepickup Music Man, and then we’re going to talk about tweaks of tone, playability, the visual side. I’m very excited about it!”

“I was trying to record my own Abbey Road.”
