Exercise 8 presents a II-V-I in the key of C major. However, on this occasion the V7 has been presented as a Dom7th (alt). If we reflect on the insights gathered in the preceding studies, we find that playing over these ‘complex’ changes now becomes relatively painless – and with nothing more than a minor 7th arpeggio, a Major triad, and a Major 7th arpeggio, we can in fact produce an effective melodic portrayal. Simplicity is the key to success.
