If you only practise one thing this month...
It’s easy to think of Dom7th (alt) chords as overwhelmingly complex structures – but this shouldn’t be the case, as Dom7th (alt) chords are nothing more than regular Dom7th chords that have undergone a little harmonic development. If you only have time to work on one thing this month, ensure you can locate both the b 5th and #5th intervals in relation to the tonic of a V7 chord. Then, be mindful that the delivery of a major triad off either of these intervals will result in the portrayal of all of the associated altered extensions (b 5th, #5th, b 7th, tonic, b9th and #9th). All of a sudden, altered vocabulary doesn’t seem so daunting.
