So proud of our NHS as it celebrates 70 years

-

Today marks the 70th anniversary of the NHS and while you may not be celebrating with a cake and presents it is no less deserving of a rousing chorus of ‘happy birthday’.

While we have never been afraid to challenge when things go wrong, there is no doubt the NHS in Bath provides world-class free healthcare for which many countries would give their eye-teeth. And it has staff in its hospitals, GP surgeries and elsewhere who go above and beyond to ensure patients and their families receive the best possible care often in challenging situations. As we herald the national landmark, our Bristol and Bath Health and Care Awards are inviting you to help us reward our local heroes working in all aspects of the sector. All you need to do is tell us about the medical staff, volunteers, porters or even those working in the cafes who have helped enhance your experience of the NHS and the care which you or a relative or friend has received. The Bath Chronicle and its sister paper the Bristol Post are looking for your tales so we can champion the individuals or team involved. Nominate for the awards onlne at www.bhealthandcareawards.co. uk. Bath’s Royal United Hospitals has another reason to celebrate with its special anniversary appeals set up to mark the 20th year of its Forever Friends Appeal. The hospital charity helps fund major projects to make a real difference to patients and their families being cared for by the RUH – going above and beyond what the NHS can provide. Since 1999, more than £20 million has been raised for the hospital and the ‘special appeals’ launch coinciding with the 70th anniversary presents the perfect opportunity to celebrate the nation’s most loved institutions, appreciate the vital role the service plays in our lives, recognise and thank the extraordinary NHS staff – the everyday heroes – and highlight how the public can show their support for their local hospital. It is time to salute not just our doctors and nurses but all medical and ancillary staff who help to make the NHS something to be truly proud of.
