Prince Edward chatted with families as he joined celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of RUH based charity Designability.

The Earl of Wessex attended a party at the Hilton hotel in Bath with 100 staff, supporters and beneficiaries of the charity which creates technology for people with disabilities or long-term illnesses.

Star of the show was the charity’s flagship product Wizzybug, a powered wheelchair for the under fives.

In his speech Prince Edward reflected on the work that had been carried out and highlighted the impact the charity had made on the lives of many people over the last 50 years.

He was pleased to receive a specially commissioned version of the Designability simple music player.

Chief executive Nigel Harris announced exciting plans for the building of new design studios and workshops at the RUH, which will enable them to help even more people over the next 50 years.

The party guests were able to view a range of products including products that can help people living with dementia which are on display at the RUH Memory Technology Gallery.

There was also an appearance from the Pepper robot, which is part of the collaborative research programme with the Bristol robotics laboratory at the University of the West of England.

Nigel Harris, CEO of Designability, said after the party: “What an amazing afternoon.

“It was wonderful to see our staff, supporters and beneficiaries come together to celebrate Designability’s 50 years.

“We were pleased so many supporters, partners and distinguished guests were able to join in the celebrations,” he said.
