Lovin’ litter pick

Volunteers from Mcdonald’s will hit the streets for a day, blitzing a litter-strewn area of the city.

The team, made up of employees from the Southgate and Weston Lock Retail Park branches, hope to make a real difference during the stint.

Residents were asked which area of the city they would like the litter-pickers to target in a poll run on our sister website Bath Live.

The area around Bath bus station came out top with 58 per cent of the vote.

Green park had 23 per cent of the vote and Queen Square had 19 per cent.

The move comes amidst growing concern over littering in the city. Earlier this year Mcdonald’s customers were branded ‘ignorant and lazy’ after rubbish was strewn across Southgate Street.

Photographs emerged showing mounds of dumped household waste on streets and in parks.

Mcdonald’s franchisee Paul Pearson, who owns and operates the Southgate and Weston Lock Retail Park restaurants in Bath, said: “I’m really proud staff from my restaurants are keen to volunteer their time for the clean-up.

“It’s great we can get readers involved in choosing which area is cleaned, to ensure our efforts make a real difference to people living in the local community.

“It’s a key priority of ours to ensure that our area remains free of litter and an enjoyable place to live, work and visit.

“As a business we understand the important role that we play in making the area a better place.”

Allison Herbert, chief executive for the BID, said: “We’re pleased to be collaborating with Mcdonald’s on this project. The BID is committed to reducing litter in Bath and the company’s ranger team is out and about every day of the week, keeping the city clean and tidy.

“We are pleased local companies are keen to get involved and spread the word about the need to stop littering and ‘love where you live.’”
