Emersons Green NHS Treatment Centre has appointed a new consultant orthopaedic surgeon to further boost the services available to patients.

Mr Kenan Dehne, a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and the European Board of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, is a specialist in joint replacement surgery, knee arthroscopy – where keyhole surgery is used to diagnose and treat problems - and Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) reconstruction.

Mr Dehne, who is married with three children, is also actively involved in medical research and has published his findings in many prestigious orthopaedic journals, as well as writing chapters for specialist medical books.

He said: “I am passionately committed to developing enhanced patient recovery, which aims to ensure that patients are as healthy as possible before receiving treatment, ensures they receive the best possible care during their operation and guarantees they receive the best possible care while recovering.

“By accomplishing this we not only achieve the best medical outcomes for the patient but we also ensure the best value for money for the NHS. In 2010 patients undergoing joint replacement at the treatment centre spent four days in hospital. Using an enhanced pathway and by working with physiotherapists just hours after surgery, that has been reduced to 2.5 days.

“This and the efficient running of our operating theatres and diagnostic services means we can maintain our very low waiting times, and I hope we can help colleagues further reduce waiting times.”

Hospital director Rob Thomas said: “We are all delighted to welcome Kenan to the team. We strive to ensure patients have the best possible experience and in our most recent figures 100 per cent of our inpatients said they would recommend us to friends and family.

“I believe his work on enhanced patient recovery and his pioneering work in joint replacement will enable us to further boost those levels of patient choice and satisfaction.”
