Girls meet Novak at Wimbledon

-

Team Bath Tennis players Millie Bissett and Morgan Cross enjoyed a winning debut at Junior Wimbledon on Tuesday after mixing with some of the greats at SW19.

The girls’ doubles partnership, who were given a wildcard into the tournament, met three-times Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic and fellow multiple Grand Slam winner Stan Wawrinka on the practice courts.

Cross and Ralph Allen School pupil Bissett, aged 16 and 15 respectively, then enjoyed their own moment of triumph on the world-famous grass courts as they beat Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto and Nika Radisic of Slovenia 6-3 7-6(5) in the first round on Tuesday afternoon.

They showed tremendous skill and fighting spirit throughout on Court 10, recovering from an early break in both sets and saving a set point at 5-3 down in the second. The British duo were broken again at 5-5 but hit back immediately to take it to a tie-break, where they again recovered from 5-3 down to take the set and the victory.

Cross and Bissett, coached by Eve Hughes and Ian Macdonald at University of Bath Sports Training Village, are part of the International High-performance Tennis Academy at Team Bath.

The tournament concludes on Sunday with the men’s singles final. The women’s final is on Saturday with the semi-finals taking place today. Seven-time champion Serena Williams faces Germany’s Julia Gorges whilst her compatriot and 2016 finalist Angelique Kerber takes on Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko.
