Selway extends lead at top

-

Terry Selway extended his lead at the top of Approach Division One with a far from easy win over Dave Peacey, who gave Selway a tough time in the closing stages. Peacey birdied the first but the rest of the half was dominated by Selway, who reached the turn three up. Coming back, Selway was still three up with four to play but Peacey caused a tense finish by reducing his deficit to one, only for Selway to calmly succeed with a half on the final hole.

Reg Morris extended his unbeaten run to six matches after winning a good competitive contest against the hard to beat George Thurston.

Morris reached dormie two after winning the sixteenth and although Thurston won the next hole, Morris comfortably halved the final hole for victory.

Sue Norris edged away from the relegation positions with a comfortable win over Danny Peel thanks to her exceptional play on the front nine. Alasdair Campbell produced the surprise of the season with a comfortable win over current champion Mike Fear, whose hopes for the title this season have received a setback. Craig Jones kept in the chase for promotion with a fine win over Mike Hazel, who valiantly fought on after going four down in the early stages. Tiger Lewis achieved a convincing win over the determined veteran Dave Ferebee, who was playing his first match of the season after a lengthy absence due to health problems.

Dennis Crombie overcame Brian Lambern to reach second after a tremendous match in which both players finished well under nett par.

Runaway Division Two leader, Ingrid Doherty, took another step towards the tile with an inspired victory over the unfortunate Brian Allen after matching the best nett score ever. Although Doherty lost the first hole, she was unstoppable and reached the turn three. Coming back Doherty continued her fine play to take the points on the fifteenth.

John Vowles eased into second, eight points behind the leader, with a narrow win over John Sercombe, whose last ditch effort was not enough. Roger Randall had a mighty contest with Ann Fear that went to the wire with Randall triumphing on the final hole.

The match of the day in the KO Cup first round was the top class clash between Brian Woodford and Colin Lee, which Woodford snatched after both players had produced their best rounds of the season.

They were evenly matched on the front nine before Woodford birdied the tenth for the lead and quickly went two up, but the resilient Lee drew level with two to play before another Woodford birdie won the match on the seventeenth.

Nick Parker overcame Bob Mcgregor to reach the first round where he will meet Roger Randall.

The League Cup contest between Terry Gleeson and Malcolm French was the proverbial ‘match of two halves’ with French recovering from a disastrous first nine to snatch victory with a supreme effort that puts him into the quarter finals.
