Don’t get caught out in 20mph speed trap

-

We recently had a family member admitted to the RUH as an emergency and as we live in Wiltshire and in one case east Bristol, we all visited fairly soon and over the three days our relative was an inpatient. Approaching the RUH from the A420 and down Lansdown Lane I certainly was well aware of the speed limit, albeit the 20 mph signs do not appear until quite a long way down. What is obviously not considered by the Avon and Somerset Police is the incredibly high temperatures experienced over the past few weeks, so I was very conscious of the effect of the heat on the brakes on my car. I certainly did not think it was a good idea to press the brakes for the whole of the deep incline down Lansdown Lane which actually was indicated in an effort to maintain the 20mph speed limit. I reached 27 mph at one point so I suppose a fixed penalty fine was to be expected and it was duly paid. However I now discover that two other family members all visiting the RUH received the same fines all of £100 each - one doing just over 20mph. I really think this is the biggest confidence trick I can think of recently. No thought at all can be given to the fact that our relative was really very ill and we were very anxious to see/hear how he was. I wonder if other readers have been tricked in this way? There must be hundreds of visitors accessing the RUH who have been treated like this. The police will tell us about the fatality which happened so tragically a couple of years ago but surely there are more user-friendly ways of establishing a speed restriction? Anne Keat
