Firm ground forces races to move course
The long, hot spell may be many people’s idea of bliss, but at Bath Racecourse the going is definitely not good. That’s because the sunny weather has made the ground too firm for the horses, so its races have been temporarily transferred to other courses until further notice. Paul Johnson, head of racing at the British Horseracing Authority, said: “As the dry spell continues we have made this decision at an early stage in order to allow horsemen and racecourses to plan as best as possible. “Despite the fact there was some rain in the area recently, there is no expectation that Bath will be able to race on the coming dates.” However the racecourse is still very much open for business, with its Lansdown Live music event taking place on Saturday, August 18. It will be headlined by legendary DJ and music producer Roni Size, with Lemar, Purist and Chris Simmonds also on the bill. And although the races will be at Chepstow, punters will be able to watch the action on big screens as well as enjoying the music. “Lansdown Live is all about local and grassroots talent, and what better way to celebrate that than with an artist from the South West, who has experienced the journey to the big time,” said Bath Racecourse’s marketing manager Tom Bettles. “Roni Size started locally and is now a household name in the music industry.” Gates will open at 2pm; people who have already bought tickets also have the option of transferring them to the Chepstow course or claiming a refund.
