‘Close the site if people can’t use it properly’ calls

-

Calls are being made to close a recycling site if people continue to leave rubbish next to the bins. Gavin Storrie, a Bath resident, is fed up with finding mounds of rubbish next to the recycling bins at Morrisons in York Place. He said: “It is an eyesore, a health hazard and it is fly tipping - a criminal offence.” The supermarket has a number of recycling bins located within the car park. They include cardboard, cans and clothing bins. Pictures taken at the scene show mounds of rubbish piled high next to overflowing bins. Asked who he thought responsible, Mr Storrie said: “I think it is people who live in the neighbourhood although I have seen stuff dropped off by people who have driven in. It is not so much the recycling. It is food waste, kitchen refuse, and items that should be taken to the recycling centre. “There is a weekly household recycling and refuse collection.” Mr Storrie is now at his wits end and wants to see something done about it as soon as possible. He said: “Close the site if people can’t co-operate. Use CCTV to prosecute the fly tippers.” Bath and North East Somerset Council has said it will review how often it visits this site in the wake of Mr Storrie’s comments. A spokesman said last week: “We are sending a crew out to clear the site. We have attempted to prevent waste building up and we continue to monitor the situation. “We will review the frequency of collection here to see if we can prevent any further build up. “We also encourage our residents to use their weekly kerbside recycling service – including food waste, cardboard, plastics, glass and tin – as well as our household recycling centres.”
