Volunteers in Twerton will soon be on patrol in an effort to catch speeding motorists who they say are making their roads dangerous. The Speedwatch equipment has been delivered to volunteers who are just weeks away from taking to the streets in the suburb armed with a speed radar to catch motorists who do not stick to the 20mph speed limit.

People have complained for a long time about speeding cars

The group’s findings and results will then be passed on to the police. The Residents Action group in Twerton campaigned to set up the community Speedwatch after being bombarded daily with complaints and concerns over the safety of their roads. Now the group of nine volunteers have access to the equipment which includes an information folder, clipboard, hi-vis jackets, a tally counter, leaflets to hand out to the pubic, a Dictaphone and the speed radar. The final stage is having on-site training at the two locations on Newton Road, which had been given the go-ahead,. Community activist Sarah Moore, who initially called to set up the Speedwatch group, said: “I’m really pleased to finally have the equipment and looking forward to helping to make our roads safer. “People have complained for a long time about speeding cars and how they don’t feel safe crossing the roads so I am glad we have set up the community Speedwatch group. “I know other communities in Bath have successfully had the initiative set up and its reduced the amount of people speeding through their area. “Speed limits are put in place for a reason and hopefully now we have the equipment we can help make people stick to them.” The call for the Speedwatch scheme came in March and since then assessments have been carried out to ensure safe, viable locations were found as well as the right training for the volunteers.
