Wright thrilled to make first team
Max Wright’s first season at Bath Rugby was a write off. Three ankle surgeries, seven months out, no games played in the blue, black and white. He was a former England under-20 hoping to prove himself in the Premiership. Patience became his biggest virtue. Having graduated from the academy to the senior squad along with scrum-half Green in the summer, Wright has got his chance early in the 2018/19 campaign. After some Bath United action, the 21-year-old was on the bench for the Premiership clash with Northampton Saints at the Rec in round four. Only eight minutes in he was called into action when Aled Brew broke his wrist. “It was definitely a day to remember,” said Wright. “It made my family very proud. “It was a bit of a shock when I got the call on the bench: ‘Max, you need to warm up.’ From there it’s just a game of rugby. Business as usual. “It’s always hard to come to a new club injured. It’s always better to come down and play and build those relationships a bit quicker, but that’s all in the past now.” Wright is happy to play 13, as he did that day, or 12, where he started the 50-27 defeat to Saracens at Allianz Park. At Bath he has the benefit of learning from the different styles of international team-mates Jamie Roberts and Jonathan Joseph. Wright added: “I just want to keep developing my game. I definitely want to keep my options open and be good all-round. “It gives you another edge to your game if you can be diverse and play both.”
