A 12-year-old from Bath has raised £2,000 for the Forever Friends Appeal at the city’s Royal United Hospital by cycling 100 miles in 12 hours. Hector Rees-davies, a pupil at Millfield Preparatory School, completed the marathon journey in a single day in August after being inspired by ex-bath Rugby player Ed Jackson. Mr Jackson, who also attended the Somerset school, is currently raising awareness and money for rehabilitation charities after suffering a severe spinal injury in April 2017. Hector, who caught the fundraising bug after washing cars and saving money for a rugby tour, managed to reach a total of £2,124.50 after spending the day cycling round the Bath area. His dad, Jonny Rees-davies, said: “My wife Vicky and I were amazed by Hector’s resilience. At no point did he complain or ask to stop. “When I asked him what kept him going, he told me that he didn’t want to let down the people who had donated money for the charity.” Shirley Shayler, headmistress at Millfield Prep School, added: “It is fantastic to see our pupils going the extra mile and using their initiative to help others. “Pupils like Hector are a great credit to our school, and I am always impressed with our pupils’ creative ways to help raise money for charities. “I hope Hector’s bike ride will inspire others to raise money for good causes.” The Chronicle is supporting the Forever Friends charity’s current appeal. The charity aims to fund projects that make a real difference to the lives of the hundreds of thousands of people who are cared for by the Royal United Hospital, Bath.
