It’s never too late to turn your hand to something new

-

I have always believed that with the right knowledge and motivation everyone has the potential to achieve great things.

Since beginning my journey into health and fitness I have met some incredibly generous and supportive people, who have encouraged me every step of the way. So when I heard of a new initiative created by Bath charity Sporting Family Change to help a group of novices prepare to take part in a triathlon, I jumped at the chance to be part of the support team.

This initiative is part of a wider programme that supports adults who live in the local community and face a number of challenges in their daily lives. Some have come through difficult relationships, some are carers and some are single parents. All are treated the same but essentially all are trying to create a better, more positive future for themselves and their families.

Using sports activities as part of a positive engagement programme designed to support people and have great benefits. Some of the people signed up to the SFC Tri programme take part in weekly fitness sessions and other lifestyle change programmes. None of the participants have ever taken part in a triathlon before and some are currently not able to swim, nor do they have much experience of cycling or running.

The programme will see them commit to training over the next eight months and culminate with them taking part in a sprint triathlon distance in May.

Having met some of the group at a swim session this week and heard how positive and determined they are, I am proud to be able to help them and I am confident they can achieve their goals.

Sport is a great leveller and it’s never too late to try something new. Often getting out of your comfort zone shows you that you can achieve so much more in other aspects of your life.
