Lansdown duo win right for foursomes

Neil Pirie and Peter Doust will represent Lansdown in next year’s Daily Mail Foursomes after they won the won the Whitbread Trophy at the weekend with 30 points – but only on countback from Dave Whyte and Malcolm Brown.

The previous weekend, Whyte and Brown joined Ian Carter to win the Captain’s Project Bowmaker with 80 points, with both events badly affected by heavy rain.

The latest midweek stableford was a very close affair and saw Steve Book finish as the overall winner with 38 points, on countback from Dean Faulkner. The pair filled the top two spots in Division 1, with third-placed Martin Coggins just a further point adrift.

Division 2 was won by Steve Hillman with 37 points, with Malcolm Kempster second on 36 and Richard King third on 34. Paul Lecki took the honours in Division 3 with 36 points ahead of Stephen Pursey (34) and Mike Cheek (33).

Roland Jenkins won the latest profession­al’s competitio­n with 40 points, finishing two clear of Kevin Cox and the in-form Book. Ron Harris claimed fourth spot with 35, one ahead of Phil Belsten.

Golf Club’s Ladies section this week, 34 players competed in a medal competitio­n. In Division One the winner, with nett 75, was Stephanie Moorfoot, beating Pippa Western into second place on countback. In Division Two, the winner was Angela Trenchard on nett 74 with runner up Sue Mortonjenk­ins scoring nett 75. In Division Three, leading the way was Heather Cottle with nett 80 while runner up Rachel Brown scored a nett 82.

The Senior Men’s captain held an away weekend competitio­n at Saunton in north Devon. On a topquality links course in fierce weather members competed over two days in a stableford points format.

The overall winner with 65 points was Steve Harper, second on 64 was Tony Jones and third with 61 was Richard Mccabe.

As we recover from a poor few days weather we realise that autumn has arrived.

Malcolm French clinched the seniors’ knockout cup after a tremendous battle with Graham Whatley in the final.

The match was all-square at the turn and although French moved two up, he needed to stay calm on the 18th after Whatley halved the arrears on the penultimat­e hole.

Brain Allen lifted the Plate after holding off a superb rally from Tiger Lewis, who fought back from five down at the turn to trail by one with three to play.

Last season’s Division 1 champion came back from two down with three to play to draw with runner-up Brian Woodford in the first match of the season. Colin Lee earned a convincing win over Sue Norris, winning wit three holes left, while George Thurston sprung a surprise by beating Mike Fear on the final hole of their contest.

Newly-promoted Nick Parker produced the best score of the day to gain a fine win over Division 1 stalwart Terry Gleeson, who was able to stave off defeat until the 17th.

Colin Lee’s steady performanc­e gave him a comfortabl­e win over Reg Morris, who failed with his putter and was beaten with two holes to spare.

Danny Peel and John Sercombe shared the spoils in Division 2 after the latter produced an excellent finish.

Chippenham Golf Club assistant Louis Boston enjoyed his best week as a profession­al by winning a total of £1,200 in the North Devon Links tournament played over the two Saunton courses and Royal North Devon.

He was in outstandin­g form as he shared third place with veteran Mike Watson (Wessex Golf Centre) from Weymouth. After a disappoint­ing 74 at RND he followed with rounds of 69 and 70 at Saunton for a total of three-under-par 213.

As he also brought home the winning team of West Country players on 260 he claimed £1,200 for three excellent days golf.

He and his pal from The Mendip Andrew Jones, former manager of Paulton Rovers FC and a successful Bristol florist who plays off eight, met St Enodoc member Martin Trees, off six, and the English amateur internatio­nal Jake Burnage, a plus-four player from Saunton.

The quartet blended well and led the team section on two of the three days before taking the overall prize.

Boston, a former Somerset county amateur from Bath, played at Bath, Saltford and Cumberwell Park before starting his profession­al career at the Windmill Golf Academy and later moving to Stockwood Vale.

He said: “I had never met Jake or Martin but we fitted together very well to enjoy a really good week. Jake was under par on his own ball in all three rounds. It was a brilliant event.”
