Cundy happy with way the side’s playing

-

Robbie Cundy played an important role in Bath City’s fifth clean sheet of the season last Saturday.

The summer arrival from Gloucester was given the night off as City saw off Bishops Lydeard in the Somerset Premier Cup the previous Tuesday, along with the rest of the regulars, and aside from that has only missed one half of football following an incorrect dismissal at Chelmsford in August, which was overturned.

“I thought we defended well to be fair,” said Cundy after helping City to a 2-0 victory at fellow National League South high-fliers St Albans City.

“We had a lot of defending to do in the second half, but we stood strong and we’re getting a good connection now, this back four.

It was the first change to the backline in the league this season, with Michee Efete selected at right back ahead of Joe Raynes.

“Michee was here pre-season, so we knew about him.

“He’s doing really well, slotted straight in.

“And the midfielders, Frank and James, helped out a lot today. Fair play to them.”

Cundy scored in both matches against St Albans last season while a Gloucester player but barely had a chance to add to that tally on Saturday, leaving him on one this term – a header against Hungerford in September.

It is a tally he hopes to build upon quickly.

“I should be scoring more,” he said. “I’m a bit of a threat but need to get a few more goals.”

The Oxford-born defender has forged a promising partnership with Jack Batten, a spine to the team which has helped achieve five clean sheets.

“He’s quality, Jack,” said Cundy. “We’ve connected really well. Maybe a bit ropey at the start but we’re doing really well now. Long may that continue.

The 21-year-old had praise for manager Jerry Gill, who recruited him on the same day as Adam Mann in June.

“He’s a good manager,” said Cundy.

“Very professional. This is the most professional club I’ve been at in (National League) North and South.

“He likes to play out from the back, which is what I like to do as well.

“So far what I’ve seen, I like it.” His preparation didn’t go unnoticed either, with last and this season’s top scorers for St Albans, Sam Merson and Ralston Gabriel, barely getting a look-in before both were replaced in the second half.

“He (Gill) watches a lot of games, went to the Taunton v St Albans game so does his research,” said Cundy.

“Obviously, that helps us out a lot.”
