Help fund ‘Tommy’ statue to remember

-

This year, November 11 will mark 100 years since the end of the First World War.

To help commemorate the occasion, the Rotary Club of Bath has struck an agreement with the local council to have a ‘Tommy’ statue in Bath - but they need the public’s help to fund it.

A donation page has been set up which hopes to raise £1,500 to be put towards the cost of the statue and donations to associated charities.

The six-foot tall ‘Tommy,’ which will initially be displayed in Parade Gardens, is meant to embody the ‘There But Not There’ message and remember those who lost their lives in the Great War.

Trevor Dawson is a prominent member of the club and part of the team behind the project.

He said: “The statues are spectacular.

“I’d heard about them being erected elsewhere in the country so thought it would be a great addition to Bath.

“We want it there before Armistice Day, of course.

“The donation page is looking healthy, but it’s not quite there yet!”

‘Tommies’ have already been put up in several notable places in the UK, including Giant’s Causeway and Big Pit.

Mr Dawson added that, although Bath’s own soldier will be in the Parade Gardens at first, he hopes it may be moved to somewhere more prominent afterwards.

“We’d love it to stand there and remind people all the time,” he said.
