PLAYER RATINGS

-

Bath Rugby could muster only a losing bonus point from their opening match in the Heineken Champions Cup. They led 20-12 at the Rec before going down 22-20 to Toulouse in Pool 1. Here’s how we rated the Bath players out of 10...

7

Nathan Catt

The loosehead was busy in the loose, aggressive in defence and part of a solid scrum.

6

Tom Dunn

Good in the loose – he threw a superb offload to Rhys Priestland - but was part of a shaky lineout which meant good possession was squandered.

7

Henry Thomas Relished getting his hands on the ball and scrummaged well.

7

Dave Attwood

Some big carries and spoiled ball in the tight. Stripped of the ball in the last play when Bath needed to score, which is unusual for the lock.

6

Luke Charteris

Didn’t command the lineout as he usually does but made a nuisance of himself in the maul.

5

Tom Ellis

His second-half yellow card cost Bath ten points. Missed some tackles but hit others hard.

9

Francois Louw

The boss of the breakdown. Must have won four turnovers through steals on the ground or jackalling and forcing penalties for holding on.

7

Zach Mercer

Was well-shackled by the Toulouse defence. Worked hard to make something happen in heavy traffic, but couldn’t execute his usual breaks and offloads.

6

Chris Cook Orchestrated the first-half attacks well but a poor kick in the build-up to Sofiane Guitone’s try proved costly.

7

Rhys Priestland

Had a good first half. Fell away after taking a bang to the right knee.

6

Darren Atkins

Looked lively with the ball but didn’t get a great deal of it. Stepped by Cheslin Kolbe for Toulouse’s second try, but tackled him well in the second half.

7

Jamie Roberts

Scored a good try and was warming into the game before he was knocked out by a Jerome Kaino tackle.

7

Jackson Willison

Made a lovely break early on then struggled to make an impact. Kicked the ball away in the Toulouse 22m; allowing a big territorial gain.

7

Semesa Rokoduguni

Was well-covered by the Toulouse defence. Would be disappointed to have dropped the ball while trying to round Guitone but made an excellent late break to pave the way for Burns’ chance.

3

Freddie Burns

The full-back scored a try, missed three penalties in all. Some were tough, but the crucial one was 20m out and in front of the posts. Failed to ground the ball for what would have been a matchwinning try late on.

Replacements - Jack Walker 6, Jacques van Rooyen 7, Anthony Perenise 6, Elliott Stooke 6, Sam Underhill 6.
