Volunteers at the University of Bath are celebrating 20 years of students helping to save lives. Marrow, the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Trust’s student volunteer network, has registered 931 potential stem cell donors from the university. Over the next year it will hold fundraising and donor recruitment events as part of a year-long celebration to raise awareness of the need to recruit more stem cell donors to fight blood cancer. Nele Gewert, a second year student is president of Bath Marrow. She said being part of the group had had a huge impact on her, adding: “I have rarely witnessed such dedication and passion in a student group and am proud to be part of a community that fuels this passion. “Marrow’s 20th year is very exciting because in celebration of what we stand for, we aim to raise more awareness and funds, recruit more donors, and pass our passion on to more students. “We want to extend a massive thank you to every single lifesaver that has signed up to the register at our various recruitment events over the past twenty years or supported Bath Marrow’s fundraising efforts.” Marrow began in 1998 when a student at the University of Nottingham heard about a friend who needed a bone marrow transplant. He organised a recruitment drive on campus to get fellow students to join the bone marrow register. Find out more about Marrow Groups atthonynolan. org/marrow or Facebook/twitter.
