Stagg scores century in latest Schools League

Bath again produced eight age group winners when Avon Schools Orienteeri­ng League held the third event of the 2018/19 season at Oldbury Court, near Bristol. Harry Stagg (Year 12) headed the 5.8km race in 58mins 10secs scoring 100 points for Beechen Cliff School. His sister Bryony Stagg (Year 10) from Hayesfield Girls finished first on the 4.6 km course in 74:22 For Kingswood School, Jamie Dale (Year 11) ran well to head the 4.6 km race times, in 46mins 13secs. Team mate Seb Crow recovered well from a serious five-minute error at his ninth control to win the 3.5 km race, in 37:28 and keep the lead in this year’s Year 10 class. Kingswood’s Katya Volkova showed the true form of a current Year 8 British Schools Champion, winning by eight minutes, with a time of 50mins 04secs for the 4.6 km course. Completing their team were Alfie Bassett (Year 7 scoring 91), Alberta Fryer (Year 9 scoring 80) and Sarafina Bonzie (Year 8 scoring 33). The team total of 504 was enough to keep Kingswood on top of the league. In the primary competitio­n the class winners for Kingswood Prep School over the 1.4 km course were Alex Burton (Year 5, 1.4 km, 8mins 32secs) with a remarkable run, leading nearly all the way. However Ollie Boutin (Year 6) was the real star having chosen to run in the Year 7 race which he won by over a minute in 11:20. Also with 100 points were: James Ardus (Year 6, 9:07) and Charlotte Marke (Year 5 9:09). Two Year 5s: Alex Lowe (9:18, 92 points) and Freddie Marke (9:34, 89 points) made up the team, who all returned times of under 10 minutes, a record performanc­e. The Kingswood Prep team total of 564 won the day The next Avon Schools League event will be at Ashton Court, Bristol on Sunday, January 13.
