Independents unveil first five hopefuls in bid to run council
A political movement free of party ties has announced its first five candidates in Bath. The Bath and North East Somerset Independent Group, or BIG, started last year and aims to take control of the council and run it for the benefit of all residents. As independents, they say they will not follow orders and will instead work together with common aims, using an agreed set of principles of open and transparent government. The model is meant to allow every councillor to bring their own expertise and enthusiasm without the need to “score points” against each other. It hopes to field around 30 candidates for May’s local council elections. Spokesperson and BIG candidate Molly Conisbee said: “We urgently need local answers to local issues. “National party politics has dominated the Guildhall for too long. “While political parties are arguing among themselves, they are not focusing on improving the quality of life for their constituents in Bath and North East Somerset, or offering anything hopeful or forwardlooking for communities.” Bidding to be the youngest woman on B&NES Council, Jess Milton, 24, said: “It is time for change; we will develop a compelling vision for this most beautiful, exciting part of the South West. We will introduce policies that build for a long-term future, not just until the next elections.” Emma Adams chairs Batheaston Parish Council and hopes to represent Bathavon North ward as a BIG councillor. She said: “We invite people to join us now, to work with us on policies, to stand as councillors and to help us in any way they can. “We want to bring politics back to the people of Bath and North East Somerset, not just leave it to the party politicians.” Also standing are Foxhill Residents’ Association chair Nola Edwards, who led the campaign against B&NES Council’s plans to redevelop the site, and Stephen Taylor, who has worked with councillors and officers in more than 40 councils. BIG is currently interviewing other candidates. Anyone else interested in standing can visit www.bigindependents. org or call Peter Andrews on 07482 544 419.
