A new art gallery is opening in Bath and it could be the smallest in the UK. The 1.8 metre by 1.8 metre unit became home to the White Heart gallery, inset, last week. The unit is situated next to The Forum Coffee House on St James Parade and is opposite the barbers “The Matchbox” which is even smaller. The White Heart gallery will also be a gift shop and feature work from nine local artists inside the box. Shelves and bookshelves opti- mise the cosy space which is filled with soft furnishings, colourful art and handmade trinkets. The owner of the gallery is Kathryn Scaldwell. She paints, makes decorations and decorative ornaments and will be selling multiple other local artists’ work, as well as her own. She is passionate about seeing other artists being successful and having a place to showcase their work, so although this is only a small space she still wants to give others a voice. She said: “I come from a family of artists so I was always painting. I do sculptures as well now. My work is very illustrative but also scenes of oil on canvas seascapes. The seaside pictures sell really well. Everything in the shop is individual and nothing is mass produced… It’s all crafted by local artists.” Kathryn has had to make the most of her 1.8m by 1.8m space. They have made the most of wall space and used bookcases to display art from the nine artists. She said: “It doesn’t look cluttered. There is lots of craft as well and it all fits quite nicely.” The tiny gallery launched last Friday with the help of Kathryn’s husband Byron. He said: “It went really well. It was really, really busy! At its busiest point it was really buzzing. “It really just fell in our laps and we jumped at the opportunity. We’ve always wanted a gallery and we kept walking past saying how amazing it would be to have that as a space.”
