Scrum-half log-jam to be solved
Of all of the positions on the field, scrum-half is where Bath Rugby are oversubscribed. While most Premiership clubs have three nines in the senior squad and one in the academy, the Blue, Black and Whites have many more in the first-team ranks. On senior contracts are Will Chudley, Kahn Fotuali’i, Chris Cook, Max Green and Darren Allinson, plus Alex Davies, who was brought in as a ten but played nine for Yorkshire Carnegie and Bath United earlier this season. As the coaches look to mould their squad for next season, that number will have to be reduced and director of rugby Todd Blackadder has said he wants four scrum-halves for 2018/19. That means at least one of the current crop will leave the club. Fotuali’i, Chudley and Green are all contracted up to the Summer of 2020. Cook and Allinson are both out of contract next summer. Given ex-london Irish man Allinson has not played for the first team this season, he is highly unlikely to be offered a new deal. As for Cook, who came through the academy, this will be an important couple of months. He will be itching for the chance to prove he deserves a new deal, but with Chudley and Fotuali’i now fit and the preferred half-backs for the big games, he might not get a chance to show his worth going forward. And if Cook isn’t offered a deal or doesn’t want to stay on, he will be replaced. The club see Davies more of a ten and he has another year left at the club after this one. Now Anthony Watson, Charlie Ewels, Elliott Stooke and Nathan Catt have signed contract extensions, there are 16 players in the Bath senior squad in the final year of their contracts.
Will Chudley is contracted until the summer of 2020
