Runners take red pants in their stride

-

Scores of people came together to take part in a cold and muddy morning run, all while wearing matching red pants.

The run was organised to create awareness for 15-year-old Luca Railton, who needs to raise £120,000 for a life-changing operation in America.

Luca was joined by around 100 friends, family and other people inspired by his cause at the Bath Skyline 5km run, on Saturday.

The run was organised by Mark Lamputt, who recently paid £1,000 for a pair of red “budgie smugglers” worn by TV presenter Nick Knowles in the I’m a Celebrity jungle, at an auction for £1,000.

The funds from that auction were also in support Luca, who was born

with bones missing in his legs and has had a 13-year-long battle to being able to walk.

The Railton family have raised over £20,000 so far, and hope to raise another £100,000 through more events and a Justgiving page.

Space Premier Fitness owner Mark is a neighbour and family friend of the Railtons. He organised the run with his sister, Hannah, but admitted that he wasn’t expecting such a great showing.

He said: “We set out to get 100 people together but we were really expecting only 40 or 50. We had to really hustle to get people together, and we only had around 50 people with four days to go.

“Everyone started talking about it a bit more and I’m so chuffed that we’ve had such a great turnout.”

Hannah added: “It was amazing just to see everyone in the flesh. Having 94 people sign up to the event is one thing, but once you see the sea of red, it makes such an impact.”
