Leading figures take key roles at university

-

The University of Bath has appointed a new chief governor.

Pam Chesters will become chair of the university council, its governing body, on April 8 - the same day that Professor Ian White takes the reins as new vice-chancellor.

The news comes as vice-chancellor of 17 years Professor Dame Glynis Breakwell works her final day as a paid university employee.

Mrs Chesters joins from the University of St Andrews where she is a member of its governing body.

She is also a non-executive director and audit and risk chair at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

As chair of council Mrs Chesters will also sit on the university’s remuneration committee which sets the pay of senior employees.

Her predecessor Thomas Sheppard, who chaired this committee, oversaw pay rises which made Dame Glynis the country’s highest paid university boss.

Mrs Chesters said: “Working alongside my fellow members of council, our new vice-chancellor - Professor Ian White - and the wider university community, I am confident that Bath’s reputation as a centre of excellence for research, teaching and the wider student experience will continue to grow.”

Professor White said: “I look forward to working closely with Pam.

“I have no doubt that her counsel, advice and guidance will make an important contribution to the University’s future success.”
