Trolleys, bikes and fences - just some of the rubbish from river

- Sam Petherick Chief reporter sam.petherick@reachplc.com

Shopping trolleys, bikes, large steel fences and even a newspaper A-board are just some of the items apparently recovered from the river in Bath.

The items were spotted on a bank off the River Avon where it meets the Kennet and Avon Canal in the Widcombe area of the city.

They included numerous trolleys, one in a relatively new condition belonging to Morrisons supermarket and another showing severe rust.

Some of the other trolleys were left filled with more items including a traffic cone and scrap pieces of metal and plastic.

A photo of the pile of waste items was posted on Twitter by Bath resident Gill Kirk who runs Lyric Communications.

They had been removed by the following morning.

Author Mary English replied: “I can never understand how shopping trolleys end up in rivers ?

“They can’t ‘accidentally’ fall in... they have to be pushed.... and who would willingly do that in their right mind?”

The Canal and River Trust, which manages and promotes 2,000 miles of waterways, was not able to confirm whether it was involved in the recovery of the items.

However, a spokesman told the Bath Chronicle: “The canal is a beautiful spot, a great place to relax, slow down and spend time with nature.

“Unfortunately people still think it’s ok to dump rubbish in the water.

“As a charity it costs us over £1 million each year to keep the waterways around the country clear of litter and plastic. This is money we’d love to spend on making improvements.

“We also have to invest a lot of time from our staff and excellent volunteers to remove all sorts of flytipped litter.

“We’re really grateful for anyone who helps with this effort, but would also stress that it’s best to do this as part of organised events.

“If you are keen to get involved do get in touch with us at canalrivetrust.org.uk or call 030 3040 4040.”
