Survival hopes still alive

Brian Woodford’s superb play in his final match of the season gave him a convincing win over Colin Lee which took him out of the Bath Approach Division 1 relegation places, but not yet 100 per cent safe.

Woodford took command early on and built up a five-hole lead at the turn and continued outplaying Lee on the back nine, winning four holes in a row to sink Lee on the 13th.

B-ob Mcgregor ensured promo tion from Division 2 with a hard fought win over a determined Brian Lambern, who kept Mcgregor in sight for as long as he could.

The contest was extremely close on the front nine with Mcgregor just one up at the turn. Coming back, Lambern valiantly drew level with six holes remaining, but Mcgregor promptly raised his game to win three holes in a row and complete a fine win with two to play.

Graham Whatley won a close contest against one of his nearest rivals, Danny Peel, to boost his chances of promotion.

Craig Jones gained a needy victory in a tight, competitiv­e match against Roger Randall which left the latter still waiting for his first points.

Mike Fear was severely tested by the redoubtabl­e Alasdair Campbell and only a last ditch recovery took him into the KO Cup final.

Campbell took the first two holes on the front nine but Fear then took charge of the rest of the half to lead by two at the turn.

Fear lost his way at the start of the back nine and Campbell fought back to take a surprising lead with four holes to play, but a splendid finish by Fear took him through on the 17th.

Nick Parker’s consistent­ly good play made light work of defeating the formidable Malcolm French to achieve smooth progress to the League Cup semi-finals.

Terry Gleeson’s superb late recovery put him into the Plate semi-finals at the expense of Sue Norris, who was edged out on the final hole.

Terry Selway won his opening match in Secretary’s Cup Group A with a convincing win over George Thurston, who fell away on the second nine.

■■Bath Go lflc ub Last Saturday the men held a four-ball betterball stableford in blustery to gale force winds.

Despite the weather the course was looking good with the greens in particular playing well for this time of year. In all 38 pairs played during the day.

The winners with a fine score of 39 points were Richard Longhurst and Stuart Ratcliffe.

Several other teams scored 38 points and the results were decided o-n countback. Second were Rich ard Harvey and Tom Baines, third Graham Cottle and John Fricker and fourth John Sharpe and George Riley.
